Refeltion sheets

Monday, May 17, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Reflection sheets. Reflection sheets. Well this makes me think of all the time I've spent in the hallway. But then it makes me think of how many detentions i didn't have to sever over all PBS is an OK system. the only problem is that when a teacher makes you fill out a reflection sheet the teachers has to stop the whole class to give it to you sometimes this is more distributive than what you actually did. My suggesting is that the teacher just hands the reflection sheet to the student and keeps teaching. this would save class time and not create a seen.

Hollister ! (:

| Powell Pumas Tale

Hollister, a brand just about everyone I know has a piece of. Hollister is my favorite place to shop because they have everything, and its all cute! Hollister sells: Jackets, hoodies, shirts, jeans, shorts, skirts, shoes, lipgloss, cologn, perfume, magazines, cd's, bathing suits, tote bags, sunglasses and even more!!

Hollister isn't just a great place to shop its also a wonderful place to visit in California. Of corse the Hollister brand is based of Hollister CA. The wonderful beaches, great places to tan, swim with the fish. Hollister is full of great adventures waiting to be discovered. I must say it is a great place to visit ! But I have one question... Why are there only about 2 Hollister stores in Hollister CA.?

Easter Eggs

| Powell Pumas Tale

By now, they're all moldy and rotten if you haven't eaten them by now. Or are they? Probably not. In fact, you don't want to eat these. Why not? Because they aren't meant to be eaten! In fact, I'm talking about computer Easter eggs. What are those? Well, one definition is, "Hidden features of a game or system that are not readily visible to the user. Programmer's delight in adding these."
Google is a notorious prankster (PT!), and they also have lots of Easter eggs. Google earth, for example. The flight Sim used to be an egg. Also, if you go to mars and search MELIZA, then you can talk to a martin (by the face)! Also, if you search certain terms on Google, you might get some odd answers. A few websites that are completely dedicated to Easter eggs include http://eeggs.com/ and http://www.eggheaven.com/. Also, if you hunt around on your computers or video games or look in some of your books or movies, you may just find some.

Trampolines!!

| Powell Pumas Tale

Trampolines are fun, jumping up and down and all around!! Many people say that they are dangerous, but i think those people are wrong! if you get equiptment to keep it safe, it is fine. As example you can get a net so you will not go flying.

The most fun you can have with a trampoline, is when you put a sprinkler underneath! Also while you are enjoying the water from the sprinkler, you can get soap and squirt it every where! it will be like a giant, bouncy slip and slide!:)With all this fun you won't even think about the danger! What do you think of trampolines?

Homeroom

| Powell Pumas Tale

So there are a couple sides to this story. Side one is against the idea of homeroom and are in favor of a longer lunch. While the second side is they favor homeroom for homework and school work. Well, Let me just say I hate homeroom!! If you didn't get that then read the last few sentences again. :) What do people do in homeroom?? Oh that's easy! NOTHING! So why do we have it? That I don't know. I know it might have something to do with homework but its not enough time, and you can barley focus in your work because everyone is talking! I tried doing homework...... it didn't really work out. The purpose of homeroom is not being fulfilled.

Since the idea of homeroom isnt coming through, we must have a solution and what's that??? Two words, longer lunch! Have any of you brought those microwavable lunches that take like 6 minutes to cook? Arent you racing to get to that microwave line and to eat lunch in time? Well longer lunches are solving 2 problems more time to finish, microwave, and wait in line for your lunch and avoid sitting for 15 minutes or so doing nothing. What do you think? Side 1 or Side 2????

What are you doing over the summer? :)

| Powell Pumas Tale

Are you going half way across the world to China? Or are you going even just to Yampa. Kids are so excited to go places this summer, and not have to think about school! Even though you might not even be leaving Colorado, it is still awesome that you get to be somewhere other than your house!

I asked a couple of people where they are going this summer. Madison L. said she was going on a cruise to the Bahamas. Zac G. Said he was going to Florida. Corina S. is going to Nebraska, and Las Vegas, and Brandy F is going to California, and I am going to COZUMEL AND XCALAK IN MEXICO!!!:) I am very very excited! And everyone else who told me where they are going are also very excited! So we are just all excited!:) Some of the other people said they were staying there for the whole summer, but some of them are only staying for a week. But I am sure wherever they are, they will have a blast!

School is ☺

| Powell Pumas Tale

School is awesome. You don't think so? well, were else besides the Internet can you learn Pi as this:3.141592653 or how to make a PowerPoint maze? Exactly! Sure, it could use some more hands-on things and cooler things to learn about, but you still LEARN! That's a lot better than becoming a robot that says, "Welcome to McDonald's®. May I take your order?" Or perhaps driving a smelly dump truck around the city.
Also, you make friends. Without school, how many friends would you have made? How many books would you have read? How much more fun have you had compared to if there. Confusing isn't it? Good thing you went to school. Also, friends help you in school so without school you wouldn't need them but then you would be bored so you would need them and then it turns into a giant paradox and then you wish you went to school to prevent this from happening and also so you could understand me so it's a good thing you go to school. So, school is definitely ☺.

How Early School Starts

| Powell Pumas Tale

"Sigh, I wish I had more sleep." Is this you in the morning? Your parents dragging you out of bed and pushing you to school. This is not the type of morning that makes your day the best day ever now is it?

School starts so early, that when you get there, you are still half asleep. Now you can't learn anything because you are not awake. The knowledge goes in one ear, and out the other. Then when comes a test, you have know idea what to study!:( This then brings your grade down. I herby declare that school needs to start later!:) If classes were just about 6 or 7 minutes shorter, we could go to school just a little later, be able to learn in a shorter amount of time because we are actully awake, and end school at the same time!

Jamba Juice

| Powell Pumas Tale

Do you remember Jamba Juice? Have you heard of it? Been to it? Maybe not because everyone always goes to Starbucks, even in the summer!! Well, once you try a fresh made smoothie, such as the Five Fruit Frenzy, you may think differently. Since summer is coming, won't you be craving sweet, cold, fresh smoothie? Who would want a hot chocolaty drink on a beautiful, nice day? I think its time to ditch Starbucks(for now).

Jamba Juice has many smoothie flavors, made from fresh ingredients. Some of the classic smoothie flavors are Strawberry Surf Rider, Peach Pleasure, Pomegranate Pick-me-Up, Aloha Pineapple, Caribbean Passion, Mango-go-go, Banana Berry, Razzmatazz, and Straw Berries Wild! Ingredients from lime sherbet, to peach juice, to all fruits like bananas, strawberries, peaches, pomegranates, blue berries, pineapple, raspberry, mango's, oranges, limes, acai, and Lemons!!

On top of all the smoothie choices, you can add shots, get a cinnamon pretzel with a side of peanut butter! They have special energy drinks and many organic snacks at the counter to go with your smoothie! A newer edition of a snack is there oat meal! They only serve it in the morning so you better be an early riser!! Sooooo have you ever been to Jamba Juice? If not I think you've been tooo focused on Starbucks!! Which is your favorite? Mine is Strawberry Surf Rider! Dont have a favorite? Go to Jamba Juice and figure it out!

Hugging In the Halls! (:

| Powell Pumas Tale

PDA. Something everyone here at Powell has heard. Public Display of Affection. This means No hugging, No holding hands, No affection. I asked around to see what others thought. (The people we interviewed prefer to stay anonymous.) "I think that, the staff sometimes takes it too far with punishment, but sometimes it is required." Another student said "I think hugging is okay, but kissing and stuff should not be allowed."

Personally, I don't understand why hugging is so bad, but I could also understand how some people could feel left out when their friends don't hug. I can see both sides to it, but it really is hard to stop. People like me who jump on their friends when they see them, yeah.. that's a hard habit to break! But you have to follow the rules (; What do you think about PDA.?

Invention Club

| Powell Pumas Tale

Who likes inventing things? Building things? Designing things? Then you should join Invention Club! In IC you plan an idea, prototype it, and then build it! Perfect for someone who has nothing to do. There might be a contest for the most usefull ideas, wackiest ideas, and more! Come join invention club today!
Where to join, you ask? The answer: Next year. I asmit, i lied, there is no Invention Club. However, if the above note interests you, then we should make one next year. Who knows, they might get invented later. Also, when somebodey says your compony name, you could say, " If only I had a quarter for every time somebody says that... Oh wait, I do!" Who would say no to that?

Friends!!

| Powell Pumas Tale

How much do you love YOUR friends?!?!?! When you get home, and you do your homework, then ask your parents, (or don't ask them) to see if you can call a friend to see if they can come over and hang out, but your parents say no, that you have other things to do, like study for an up coming final, (Remember, its the end of the year. Finals are coming!) or you could go practice an instrument that you are dragging on, and only playing it because your parents say it makes you think more critically about the world around you. (Its true, instruments do actually do that.) Then you say "NO!" You want to be with your friends!

Well you are both right. It is good that you are playing an instrument, and need to be studying for an up coming final. But it is also good to be with friends! Recent studies show that since it is hard to tell you parents things, you can tell your friends those things. So leave time for things like practicing an instrument, and studying, but then AFTER those things, you can be with friends! :)

Final Tests

| Powell Pumas Tale

Its the end of the year and schools almost out. You would think the school work would start wearing down because we are so close to summer, but no. We have all these final assignments and tests. Do the teachers realize all the teachers are putting work on our shoulders??? Maybe not. Maybe they only focus on their class, im not sure. If it were up to me I would start the final assignments earlier so we arent struggling to get a good grade on all our assignments for our final semester grade.

If we started our assignments earlier, persinally I believe we would all to better. We would have less stress, more time, and we would do our work with more quality to help our final semester grade. All students should get a chance to show their intelligence and growth they've learned throughout the year. Maybe we can try something next year. :) Well until then, get all your finals done! Summers almost here!

Cell Phones

| Powell Pumas Tale

Hi cool cat here telling you about cell phones. No cell phones are allowed in the building. If you are caught with a phone it will be taken. But I guess it depends on the teacher. But remember most teachers will and have the right to take it until the end of the year or until your parents come and get it. Will d. says "I say that as long as it isn't distracting in class they should be allowed." Personally i agree that cell phones should be allowed if they don't cause a problem.

Homework

| Powell Pumas Tale

I know, I know, that's not a topic you like. But it's a fact of life. And it's helpful. What? You saying that it's not? How so? It's review? Oh. Well, review is helpful. Many times there has been something that I didn't understand. When doing the homework, it all became clear. And that's just one of the advantages of homework.
What are the other advantages, You ask? Those include burning the torturous memory into your brain so you can remember it for a test, studying for a test, and torture for teachers entertainment. Well, not really, but it can feel like that at points. But it's all to help you learn. So, next time you get homework, just do it, and it will not come back to haunt you.

Favorite Subjects (:

| Powell Pumas Tale

Math here, Science there. We go from class to class every day. Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. I know many students who LOVE social studies which personaly is my most disliked class. Language Arts or Math are probably my favorites, but many students would dissagree. I don't understand why there are so many conflicts on trying to decide this, but then again everyone is different. Maybe its a good thing that we all think different...?
There are some students who dislike all of their classes. They don't care weather it's Math or Language Arts. They can't stand school the only reason they come is to see friends. At times I am like that, but just being with my friends makes my days great ! (:

Teen Jobs

| Powell Pumas Tale

How many of you need spending money? Who wants to save up for a car? college? that pair of shoes you saw at the mall? Well I think teen jobs are a great way for teens to get job experience, responsibility, and to earn what they want. A couple hours of work a day I believe would benefit the teen. By getting a job this would teach you good customer service, something most jobs need. Getting a job as a teen could benefit you and get you prepared for your permanent career.

On top of teen jobs being beneficial for teens I also feel they are important. A teen job prepares and teaches a teens about business and profit. I also feel when you are a teen your pretty close to getting your own life and job. If you saved your money as a teen until you finished college think of that money and what you could to with it to get your life started. I know I'm going to start saving for when I finish college. So whats your plan????

Passing Periods

| Powell Pumas Tale

Powells passing periods are actually kind of scary. There is so many kids out there, that you have very little space to walk. All of the kids are pushing and shoving eachother, so you are scared that they will push you, and leave you there, and you will be late to class. Since this school is so big, it is hard to get to each of your classes in only 4 minutes!

On top of all of that, people are trying to RUN to there classes, and they knock your YOUR homework and books out of your hands Then people leave you there because they are also rushing to class 3 seconds before the bell rings. Then the bell rings, and you are left in the hall picking up all of your books and homework. OYu get to class out of breath, and you don't have a pass. What do you do?

School Trips

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Should we go to DC next year? I think not. Sure, it's fun, and it's a learning experience, but in this economy, the trip is very expensive.(Over $300 for an adult) It was always expensive, but now travel costs are rising. I do not think we should go, at least not until the trip is cheaper. This will save money. However, will people be vangered at this mony-saving move?
This goes for other trips. Elitches, for example. This is not educational. It's a reward! Why not use something like ice cream, for example?
This does not go for educational trips like the Dinosaur Ridge Trip. Thet is an educational trip that will help people learn.
Another thing: why spend money on trips like DC instead of paying teachers that now have to retire? Budget cuts are large crippling factors. So, why waste that money on DC? Why not use it to getting things for the school? Who agrees?

After school, but not related to school..... sports ! :)

| Powell Pumas Tale

School starts so early, but ends kind of late! Then we come home to do homework, but also have to go to whatever sport we do..... if you do actually do a sport. Some people like me, I have dance 2 hours after school every other day, I babysit 3 times a week, and have to practice my instrument, and on top of all of that, I have all of this homework!:(
Maybe school could end a little bit earlier, and the teachers could make us work a little bit harder since the class periods would be shorter. Instead of having class periods 45 minutes, we could have them 35 minutes, then we could get home earlier, and have more time to do homework, and whatever else we have to do after school!!!!

School Lunch Prices

| Powell Pumas Tale

Tell me if im crazy or parinoid but personsonally I think school lunch prices are overpriced! Lunch for a day can get up to $5 or more! That can add up to more than $25 a week!>:( You could be spending $100 or more dollars for lunch a month! Think of what you could do with the money you saved if the school lunch prices went down.

A reasonable price I believe for lunch is $2.00-$3.00. Then you would only have to pay $10-$15 dollars a week, this would add up to $40-$60 a month compared to $100 dollars a month. This change would be very convenient for students and parents. Once again tell me if I'm being dramatic or picky but I strongly feel the prices are too high. What do you guys think???

Now I don't know about you - But I am definitely excited for summer!! Get to swim, go tanning, dance around, travel, hang out with friends, party party party, and just have fun! band t-shirt day

Friday, May 7, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Band t-shirt day is the last day of spirit week and is proving to be unpopular so far but because of the fantastic nerdyness of nerd day most people didnt feel like dressing up. i think band day was very uneaded for nerd day it should have been something more exiting like socks or head bands or even crazy mittin day. But band day was kind of stupid because most people dont even like music much less have a s-thirt for a band! I think band t-shirt day was a waist of spirit week time.

School Cliques!(:

| Powell Pumas Tale

vjrebfgubrovgurhgurgho. That is what I I think of cliques! Cliques just make people feel left out! The more cliques there are the more people try to fit in. They try to be something they are not, which is never good! No matter what group you want to be in, you should just be yourself and they will like you for who you really are, not who your trying to be. Cliques cause many people pain and heartbreak!:(
Its never fun!!(: so if you are ever in this position try to help the best you can!!(:

Say What?

Wednesday, April 28, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Yogi Berra was an all-star catcher for the New York Yankees for 10-some odd years, and played in more World Series than anybody. He was very outspoken, but it was often his speaking that got him in the news and it is his speaking that he's remembered for today. His quotes may not make sense at first, but if you think about it, they simply do. And because this is a school blog, I'm going to try to connect his crazy wording to kids everyday lives.

"I didn't really say everything I said."
Huh? What is that supposed to mean? Well, in school, their are going to be times you make mistakes. Or do something embarrasing. If your going to get in trouble, you'd better fess up. But if you're with your friends, you didn't really do whatever they said you did. Or at least that's what you tell them. They may understand, or, with a little luck, be so confused that they just drop the subject all together.

"You can't think and hit at the same time."
I feel this is definitaly true in baseball; you do a lot in batting practice and train, learning the perfect way to hit. But when you step up to the plate in a game, you have to just let loose. If you've practiced enough, it will come naturally. In school, a similar thinking applies. If you're taking your science final, and you've studied for weeks in preparation, and the last multiple choice question is giving you fits, go with your gut. Don't overthink it. Somewhere in the back of your brain you'll remember to cock your hands back, or that that last bit of information on anatomy. As long as you've thought it through, just trust yourself. You'll probably get it right.

"No one goes there anymore. It's too crowded."
Sometimes you can't follow the crowd. If everyones doing something, maybe it's better your not there. And you'll be surprised by how many of your friends actually aren't there that you could hang with.
"This will be the last time I type something until I do it again" Well, duh!
-Rick Z.

Life......(:

| Powell Pumas Tale

Many people feel as if they can explain their life, or exactly what your going through with simple quotes. But in all reality, though quotes may explain things, you have to change it, and live your life how YOU want to. Life....it is jsut a word, because you have to give it a meaning!!(: Your life is a very complex thing. It consits of many things. You have to make choices, some can be good, some can be bad. But no matter what you chose you are still living your life to its fullest!!(: Even though you cant go by quotes, some i think give good lessons that you should live by!!(:

Live your life crazy and love every second of it.....(:

When theres something you really want, fight for it dont give it up no matter how hopless it seems. And when you've los t hope, ask yourself if you're gonna wish you gave it just one more shot. becuase the best things in life don't come free.....(:

The best things in life are unseen...thats why we close our eyes when we kiss, cry and dream....(:

Remember when...friends didn't lie to you; &&the worst thing anyone ever called you was a meanie. Remember when you were judged on how nice you were; && how you only wanted to hear "i love you.." from your mom? Well...things change.
Because now...Friends barely tell yuo the truth;Girls will call you a ton of things that will make you want to break down&cry. Now you're judged on how expensive your clothes are, &&you would give up every single time your mom told you she loved you just to hear him say it once...(:

I believe these are good ones that explain things that young girls go through!!(; But you cant depend ont them, you have to paint your own canvas with as much paint as you can.....

NFL Draft

Friday, April 23, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

And with the 25th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos selct Tim Tebow from the University of Florida! Watching this on ESPN from my basement, I was estatic as I heard Coach McDaniels had traded up to select in my eyes on of the top 3 best quarterbacks in this years draft class! Tim Tebow, a leader in the locker room and on the field at Florida, brings an intensity to the Denver organization that will hopefully turn a mediocre team into a Super Bowl contender. The Broncos also picked Demaryius Thomas‎, a wide receiver from Georgia Tech with the 22nd pick.
Many fans have doubted Tebow's chances at being succesful in the NFL. His awkward throwing motion and spread offense he played at Florida will give him some trouble transitioning to the NFL. Many analysts on ESPN were very negative about the Broncos pick. But Jon Gruden, the former Buccaneers coach who led them to the Super Bowl, says he likes the pick. He believes Tebow will succeed under coach Josh McDaniels. About his throwing motion, he says, "Both Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers were critiqued for their throwing motion. They fell way back in the draft, but have gone on to do great in the NFL. I think Tebow will follow a similar path."
The Broncos have now replaced two starts McDaniels sent packing out of town; Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall. Now, with the 22nd and 25th picks in the draft, they've replaced those two. Coach Josh has confused a lot of people in rebuilding this franchise. But if he knows what he's doing, the Broncos could be a contenter as early as this year.

Extra Draft notes: Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford went #1 to the St. Louis Rams, and D-Lineman Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska went #2 to the Detroit Lions. 3 of the first 4 picks were from Oklahoma, with Bradford and Gerald McCoy and Trent Williams going 3 and 4. Dez Bryant, WR from Oklahoma St went to the Cowboys. Jimmy Clausen (QB Notre Dame) and Colt McCoy (QB Texas) didn't go to any team in the first round.

Friendships.....(:

| Powell Pumas Tale

During middle school, there are many issues you can have with your friends. But part of being in a strong friendship is going through tough times so the good times come easy!(: Friends can come and go, but when you find one that isn't worth giving up, you better hold on tight! At this point we are are still young and we are very "innocent" and dont really know what is right and wrong! When you and your friends fight, you just have to let both of you blow off some steam! but if you guys are truly great friends, you wont let anything come between you!(: Just remember friendship is an amazing thing, and you should never let something small come between you if you truly are best friends! Heres some quotes that i feel can represent friendship like no other!(:
a friend is someone who knows the song in youe heart and can sing it back to you when you forget the words(:,......Friendship is like peeing your pants, everyone can see it, but only you can feel it........(: Everyone fights, and bad things happen but with your friends by your side your unbeatable!(:

What clubs are we missing?

| Powell Pumas Tale

Powell offers plenty of amazing clubs for its students to take part in. But some students feel they are being left out because their sport isn't included. The sports offered include track, wrestling (for boys), basketball, and volleyball (for girls). While these are great sports for the students interested, some feel their should be more.
Many of my friends play soccer, baseball, or football or other sports that Powell doesn't offer as a club. Two students recently told me they wished we had soccer at Powell. After all, on the field down by the track we have soccer goals in the ground! Plus we have two backstops for baseball that are only used in P.E. I understand that money is tight and some teachers just can't coach any sport period. They have a life outside of school. But some students wish that we could support a couple extra sports teams.

Relationships......(:

Thursday, April 22, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

At Powell there are many stages of relationships. There are the relationships where you get asked out, and within a day or two they break up with you for someone else. There are relationship where they last for about a week or so and then the guy/girl tries to get to serious to fast, and you end up breaking up. There are also relationships where they last for very long and you grow so close, but one little thing happens and you break up. There are also the most common relationships where you start dating and you talk all the time, and the guy/girl starts to drift until it ends in heartbreak. At this point we are only in middle school and if you try to make something last no matter what you do, its bound to end up in heartbreak. We went around and asked our fellow students what they think about relationships and we got the answers as follows:
Grace M., 8th grade said "Relationships aren't worth my time...."
Josh S., 8th grade said " Relationships are stupid."
Ryan L., 8th grade " Im fine with relationships...."
Leanna K., 8th grade said "I'm fine with relationships until they get ridiculous and you get pushed out of someones life completly because they are in a relationship with someone else....."

Earth Day!

| Powell Pumas Tale

Today is Earth Day! Around our school people are (or were supposed to) wear green to honor our Earth! We should take this day to be a little more-environmentally friendly. Don't stand in the shower for too long, don't let water run when you don't need it, etc. And of course, recycle! Everyone can do their part, and help save our failing ozone and environment. If everyone recycled an extra sheet of paper today, we could save hundreds of trees!
If you're afraid your not doing anything to save our planet, don't worry! You may be doing something without even knowing it. If you ride your bike to school or walk, your saving our atmosphere by not riding in a car. If you ride a bus or carpool, you help because not everyone is driving their own seperate car giving off fumes. Saving our planet may be as simple as turning off the water when you brush your teeth. If we start this Earth Day, then we can make our planet a better place to live for generations to come.

CODE AND CORE what's the difference?!?!?!

Friday, April 16, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

This semester our school introduced CORE. Which stands for Community-Minded, Own it, Respect, and Eager to learn. This has been a really cool program that has gone through our school. It really helps us be a good school and strive to be better. I think this is a really good concept and very original. Yet its not so original for Powell. Last Monday i was at Newton for a Powell Puma volleyball game and couldn't help noticing some posters on the wall. These posters stated a four letter word. NO it wasn't CORE but it was CODE. In Newton CODE stands for Caring, Open-Minded, Discipline, and Engaged. Is it something that just runs in the district? I thought that too until I asked Kelly T. and Bridget D. former students of Newton. They said it was introduced to them last year at the end of sixth grade. They also said they handed out "CODE cards" and put on a play to demonstrate the meaning of CODE. This sounds really similar to what Powell did. They put on a play with CORE man and Dr.Destructo it was a very entertaining. But we got introduced to this idea in the beginning of the second semester of this year. Did we copy Newton? Maybe there trying to get this kind of thing started in the littleton district but i know for sure that Newton had this idea before us. So again whats the difference between CODE and CORE? I don't know that's what we will have to figure out. Even though we don't know who had this idea first it is a great concept to have in our everyday curriculum at Powell Middle School! Hopefully this concept is helping both schools become better schools and helping this students become excited to exceed in school. So no matter what school copied what school lets just end this year with a great and positive attitude!

CODE and CORE

| Powell Pumas Tale

This semester we introduced CORE to our school. C- Community-minded O-Own It R-Respect E-Eager to learn! At Newton they have CODE. C- Caring O-Open Minded D-Discipline E-Engaged. These two words and the meanings of their letters help the Powell and Newton students stay on task and be a better school. But where did we get these from? Well, at Powell we were introduced to CORE at the beginning of the 2ND semester this year. Meredith and I asked Kelly T. and Bridget D. when they were introduced to CODE. They went to Newton last year and half of this year, they mentioned that CODE became part of Newton last year at the end of the year. At Newton they put on a play to represent what CODE looks like. When Powell brought CORE to us, they also put on a play with Core Man and Dr. Destrocto. Did we copy Newton? Well, maybe the two schools talked and they could be trying to get it around the district to help all of our schools to become better schools all around. We also have CORE cards that the teaches give out when we represent any part of CORE. At Newton they also have CODE cards that teachers give out when a student represents CODE. Now the question is, who came up with this idea first?

Detention Or Not?

| Powell Pumas Tale

Hey Powell Pumas, I want to talk to you about detentions. Recently, we have stopped having detentions and started using CORE reflection sheets. What do YOU think is better? Would you rather stay after school and copy a bunch of rules about the school, even though it has nothing to do with what you did? Or, would you rather be pulled out of class and answer questions that will make you think about what you did to get yourself in trouble. Even though some teachers will make you stay after school and complete them. It just seems like they didn't get rid of detentions, they just changed their name. Well tell me what you think detentions, or no detentions?

Drama

| Powell Pumas Tale

Drama is what makes the school go around. Every girl does it once in there life. It usually starts from something that someone hears and then tells everyone and builds from there. No one likes it especially if its about you!!! The question is though what do u girls like to start drama about? Mostly its that simple word everyone knows and if you don't know what I'm talking about it BOYS!!!! Its just about who they break up with or they flirt with you or there just a player. Guys don't know it but there the start to every girls drama. Sounds crazy but i bet you anything the boy did something to cause it. If there was no drama in the world this would be a pretty boring life! To me seeing drama is like an action movie with girls fighting like tigers. It pretty funny sometimes but not when it ends in physical contact. One quote that I'm thinking of right now is. " Oooo Drama lets get popcorn!!!" Yes this is a real quote and I'm not lying. Just i wish people would realize what there doing to other people when they start this drama. Drama can really hurt some people and make them feel bad about themselves. Everyone, lets just not cause drama and be good people like i know you guys can be!!! :)

Girls Drama!

| Powell Pumas Tale

Drama in middle school for girls is no fun! Normally drama starts from a rumor or just two people getting in a fight. Some people love drama and try to start it and keep it going. Others try to stay as far away from it and try to end it when it starts. The best thing to do is ignore all the rumors and don't get involved with drama. Some popular topics that drama comes from is boys. Girls get jealous VERY easily and if one girl likes a boy and another girl goes out with him, it's just downhill from there! It makes it worse when it's your friend that likes the boy that you are going out with. Although, drama can make life more interesting. What would life be like without drama? I think it would be boring, but extremely calm. Drama is just part of life and you go through it more than once. I'm not saying I like drama, but I don't hate it unless it is going to far. Girls take it really seriously, and it can lead to bad things. The girls that start it have no idea what goes on in the other girls life and they don't know how bad it can hurt them. But as much as you can, try to solve drama and don't make it any worse than it already is. Be nice to everyone but you don't HAVE to be friends with them all, just be nice(:

What Do Guys Think of Girls?

Tuesday, April 13, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Have you ever wondered about what guys like or see in girls? Well, here are some answers to your questions. We interviewed a couple of seventh grade guys and asked them what do you think about girls? Will D. replied, "When I think of girls I think they are goofballs, too serious, and are really overly dramatic about stuff.." When we asked Robert D. about the problem and commented, "Girls usually don't like to party, and always try to be legit." So, obviously we have two very different sides of the situation. So we asked them, what do you see in girls? Will D. said, "I look into their personality, also a girl that can party, and somenone thats laid back." Robert D. repiled, "I like girls that aren't strongwilled, and if they're organized" So there you have it, the answers to the worlds toughest qeuestions.

Sports!:D

| Powell Pumas Tale

There are many sports to choose from. You can play sports and you can watch them. Most people have their special sport that they are great at or that they love to watch! We talked to a few people at our school to ask them what their favorite sports are. Rachel L. said that she does gymnastics and soccer! She likes those two sports because they are very fun and a good way to get your energy out. She does gymnastics at Peak Athletics and soccer for Littleton. We also talked to Christian A. who is a sixth grader at our school. His favorite sports are football and lacrosse. He likes those sports because it is fun to tackle people and hit them with sticks. Christian plays for the panthers. Another boy we talked to was Alex T. His favorite sports are hockey and baseball because they are fun and exciting! Alex plays for the panthers in baseball and Junior Eagles for hockey. Sports are very fun to play and most people are on a team. I love competitive swimming and track! Those are my two favorite sports in my opinion. There are so many sports out in the world!! What are your favorite sports!?(:

What Girls Think of Boys(:

Monday, April 12, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Well...boys. They can be nice. Or mean. There is a lot to say actually. Meredith and I interveiwed a few sixth grade girls at our school to ask their opinion on boys and what they look for in a guy. A few things they said about boys is that they are annoying, they judge girls by looks and not personality, most are players, they are really immature, and they are hard to figure out. Now, there are still some good things about guys. They can be sweet sometimes, and some very few though, are cute. These girls also told us what they look for in a guy. Some of the I am pretty sure may not happen. But they said: hot, nice, honest, funny, and sensitive. As most of us girls know, most guys are NEVER sensitive. They always act tough and they are not always the most honest people. Boys can also be bad and they sometimes lead you on. Another thing boys do is, they are nice to you and then when they are with their little friends they act like a jerk. Always wait for the right boy to come. Make sure they treat you right and how you want them to and make sure they actually care about you and they are not leading you on! Girls, what do you think of boys?;)

What do I think of a boy?!?!?!?

| Powell Pumas Tale

What do I think of boys? At first I'm speechless but then I know there is more than enough to say about them. When I hear someone say the B word the first thing that's pops into my head is hard to figure out, lazy, immature, cute, annoying, and rude. Guys are the most complicated thing in the world, maybe even more complicated then that math pretest about a whole new subject and you have no idea what it means. Yes, i have had my experiences with guys and trust they didn't end well. All i would like to see in a guy is one who's really cute, honest, funny, super sweet, and sensitive. They tell you like you then nothing! Nothing at all, not even that six letter sentence you've been wanting to hear since you first saw them. This six letter sentence happens to be Will You Go Out With Me? Yep, but they never say it. The worse though is when they lead you on. It's the worse. Although boys can have all these bad things they can also have good things. They can be really sweet, spoil you, and just treat you right. The things they say to you just make you want to melt like an ice cream cone on a hot summer day! Boys make the world spin around just like everyone says, "Cant live with them, cant live without them!"

School Uniforms for Powell

Friday, April 9, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

I wake up early in the morning. I start to get ready for school when i notice i have nothing ot wear. As a girl, it is very important to have a good outfit to wear to school. Plus, our school has a kind of strict dress code. Because of that we can only wear shorts that are below our fingertips and no tank tops. It is very hard in the fall and spring to pick out an outfit for school. Therefore, it takes very long to pick out an outfit as a girl! One easy solution that nobody wants is school uniforms! Even though that would cover every outfit for the school week, and it would be a lot easier to get ready, no one wants school uniforms. They would be very uncomfortable. Many girls and even guys want to look good and have their own style and show it off at school. And i think it would be okay to wear shorts shorter than your fingertips as long as your not showing anything, same with tank tops. I just think we should be able to wear shorter shorts than shorts as long as guys!

SUMMER, for boys

Tuesday, April 6, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Summer rules, from the birds to the bugs to the flowing stream......NO! Summer is about hanging out with friends not girlish birds or flowing streams. Here at Powell I love to go to the creek behind the school with some floss, ham, and a stick. Bet you don't know what I'm doing... I'm catching crawdads. Crawdads are small lobster-like animals that vary in color and in size. They are blue, black, red, and more and range from 1-10 inches. Although it is fun catching them it is more fun doing it with friends. Friends are the key balance of summer they help you every step along the summer road. Without them summer would be bland unless you go traveling(I get to go to Costa Rica this summer, Ha Ha Ha).

Summer is also a time for you to lose everything you learned that year, so to help the summer grade slump use flash cards or those little travel questions at least once a week to keep you smart. No matter what you should have fun during summer and don't let it slip by playing video games or watching TV all day. This will be my last blog, but look for me elsewhere on the paper. Until later...

Summer... for girls. :DDDDD

| Powell Pumas Tale

SUMMER!!! It's almost here! Only seven more weeks left. Seven more weeks till no school, till endless heat(:, till cute shorts, till friends, till NO STRESS! Also... there is seven more weeks to get your grade up ;D Ha, yeah summer and school put in the same sentence doesn't sound so great, huh? We don't have summer school here at Powell. But if your grades aren't looking that great, they do hold you back. Imagine being a step behind all your fellow classmates. Thaaaaaat would be tough. So before the end of the school year bump your grades up! They give us so many opportunities to have decent grades, take advantage of them! That's not easy to say, or do. Push yourself. I promise it will help you in the later on. Start out being organized. Use a planner, it really does help you to never forget about assignments. Next step, go in for lunch to classes that you have been struggling in, you will get a better understanding of the lesson if the teacher is directly saying it to you. Now, actually DO your homework. They wouldn't give you homework if they thought it wouldn't help you in the long run, common sense. If you flunk a test, ask to re-do it. Getting a D is better than an F, am I right? Last step, relax. If you actually do try doing all of the above, you would have improved in that certain class. By the way, this isn't coming from a A student. I struggle too. But I have been doing some of that advice and I have improved. Take my word, it really works.
Good luck!(:
Just seven more weeks.

Procrastination for ladies.

| Powell Pumas Tale

AHH,PROCRASTINATION. Some thing people like me always run into. It is probably the worst habit to have. I'm in seventh grade and still struggle with it, and we are almost done with the year! Most the time we just try and avoid our homework, or cleaning our room, or writing a blog. <- I just realized I was trying to avoid that. But when reality strikes you notice that the things you have been ignoring, are STILL there. You STILL have to do it, but this time it's under pressure and you might have other stuff to add on to it which makes the whole situation difficult. So try and stop this haunting habit now. I'm sure it will get a whole lot worse as an adult if you don't. Even if you don't fall under the category of a "procrastinator," it is still good to be aware of getting yourself organized and on top of it before it you DO fall under that category.
SO! Don't let things drag you back, get your stuff done so you are stress-free and happy(: Have a nice day!

Procrastination... for boys

| Powell Pumas Tale

Procrastination is a serious problem. I do it and I know you do. Don't try to hide it, every boy procrastinates at some point in their life. It may be on homework, school work, chores, or almost anything else you can "do". The only way I can help you with it is to tell you to not do it. In the end of it all it is your decision on what you want to do. But my suggestion is to do the work and get it over with, you will take more time procrastinating than you will doing the work. I procrastinate a lot and regret every minute of it later. I can tell you to do your work but you don't have to. You do not have to listen to me (but you should), no matter what it is your decision.

Procrastination is a sensitive issue for school kids and even adults that can be helped if you try harder and harder to beat it and get your work done. There will be one more blog coming so I can make my deadline. So until I finish the next one...

Middle school drama... for boys?

Friday, April 2, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Drama... well, not really my subject considering I'm a boy.

Boys aren't really big on drama, we have little bits here and there but nothing like girls. The only drama we have are little insults or breakups but we are not affected by gossip or just drama itself. That is why the term drama queen is QUEEN not KING, you never hear anybody saying "oh, he is such a drama king." It just doesn't work you cant make boys the center of drama, it upsets the natural balance of life. If you do the world might explode (now that would be DRAMATIC). Yeah drama is not big with boys you can try and try again but boys are not affected, and we just think the whole thing is stupid.

I have no idea why I am writing about something i know nothing about so I should probably stop before i make myself look stupid. So, until next time...

MIddle School drama for girls.

| Powell Pumas Tale

One of the worst things ever. You wouldn't imagine how the slightest things could hurt you or one of your very closest friends. It all starts when you gossip. It's easy to say, "don't gossip." In reality it is not easy to stop. Everyone does it, even guys believe it or not. That one spine tingling, intriguing word that has every attached in one breath, could ruin a reputation or a friendship. You never think about it, until it happens. Keep these things in mind before you could destroy what you have. If some one is trying to bash some one that you haven't been getting along with, the human reaction would be to bash that one person with that other person. That sounds a little confusing when it's written all out, but it is like a natural habit most people do daily. To get you out of that situation, you should tell them you're not in a mood to talk about them, or be the bigger person and tell them that gossiping won't make anything better. Usually people are shut down and have nothing to say once you confront them about that. One of the things you should be most aware of out of everything is self control. Only YOU can stop your self to pass on that tiny secret, or in other words that big fat lie. The only thing that will help you have self control on this difficult subject is imagining everything without a friend, and without a good reputation. I chose this subject because i thought it would be good for today, tomorrow, and a couple years from now. I have said all that I needed too, now it's up to you to make the difference.

Bad Days... for Boys

| Powell Pumas Tale

Two things, if you are a boy and you are having a bad day, then read this article. I will teach you some not so olde-timy remadies for your bad days. To start off, just think positive it is only a bad day if you make it one. If you wlak arounsd school like a sad-sac you will just feel worse. You could also try to find a way to make school fun. For example make studying a game or tests like a quiz show. Also make something to look forward to. You could bring a special lunch like sushi or another food you do not have very often, or you could make plans to go to a movie after school or go to a friends house.

Remember no matter what, it will only be a bad day if you make it one. Stay positive and always remember my pointers. This is only the first of many articles to come from me. Look for more of my posts, but for now Im out...

Good morning late start!

Wednesday, February 24, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

We have a late start today so everyone's awake and ready to work! We all know about the school shooting at Deer Creak middle school, less than three miles from where the Columbine High School massacre happened almost 11 years ago. The shooting could have been a lot worse if one of the math teachers at the school, wouldn't have stepped in and tackled the gunman. One of the kids is in critical condition and the other one should be just fine. No one knows yet why exactly the kid decided to shoot.

To end on a better note, the 8th grade guys basketball tournament is this thursday! Good job Powell with 20 wins and only 2 losses! Wow, go pumas! The choir concert is also this thursday and you can check that out after the basketball game! Also, the choir classes get to watch the Arapahoe High school choir perform during class today. Have a good day!

An outstanding win in 2 catagories!

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Yesterday, hardy souls from Powells A team traveled to Euchlid to play in a basketball game. The pumas showed great heart out there and pulled off a great victory. The team dominated in passing and totaled the Euchlid team's defense all day.
On the other side of the fence, follies was great yesterday. All preformers worked really hard practicing and getting ready for this and their combined effoerts paid off. They created an outstanding show and even though some were really nervous, they pulled through and did great.

Around the World in 1 Paragraph

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Many things have been happening in the world. There have been two earthquakes on the opposite spectrum so far this year. There was a minor one in Chicago with no injuries, deaths, or major damage. In Haiti, one of the only fourth world countries, there was a huge earthquake. Thousands are dead in the rubble while others are living in Tent Cities. It brought the must needed attention to this underdeveloped country.

Obama is trying to reach across the aisle but is saying the Republicans aren't reaching back. The Democratic Super Majority is out and Senate seats are more evened out.

CORE

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

CORE is one of the newest concepts and probably the most talked about. I have only seen one person so far fill out a CORE sheet even though people are still behaving badly. The kid I saw filled it out because he spoke without raising his hand. The kids that kick lockers get no punishment.

CORE is a new concept that is used to enhance positive behavior. I think that the positive behavior is definitely being enforced. This kid that always behaves badly got a CORE Card and he taped it to his shirt and paraded it around the school for the rest of the day. I've noticed an improvement in his behavior since he gets more and more chances to win free food. The kids that are usually good though don't get rewarded as much, but I think that's okay. Some kid that has been good their whole lives and doesn't get as many CORE Cards as some bad kid isn't all of a sudden going to go bad.

I think that CORE is a definite succes. Community minded, Owning it, Respectful, and Eager to learn is a great way to go through school.

Behind the Scenes

Friday, February 5, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

I was sitting at the computer brainstorming idea, or stalling-whatever you want to call it- when I realized that no one ever writes about what goes on behind the scenes. No one has ever captured how hectic it is at the last minute or what it's like to be working together.

The process begins with brainstorming ideas to write articles about. Each reporter has to think about a topic to write about for an article, editorial, quick news, and after school activity. Then they're assigned a photographer to follow them around and take picture of topics. The photographer then posts the pictures to the wiki and waits around for the reporter or interviewer to finish.

Things get interesting on the last day when everyone realizes how far behind they are. Well, not everyone is far behind but five days is a short time to write four articles. The photographers sit there, waiting for the editor to finish editing and publish all the stories. Once it's sent to them, then it's a race to post it to the right page on the wiki. The video team starts scrambling to post their video because it takes so long to download. The Editor in Chief wanders around making sure everything is going smoothly or running around if things aren't. The salespeople and social media directors sit there smugly, glad that they finished.

And that is how the Puma's Tale works.

Brain Bowl

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 | Powell Pumas Tale

Brain Bowl is an after school competition between schools for the smartest students. Every Tuesday teams meet to practice for the actual competition which is on February 6th. The questions that the students are asked include everything, from geography to history. There are two sixth grade teams, two seventh grade teams, and two eighth grade teams that get to compete.
Every team gets so into this competition. The Smarticle Particles recently designed hats and t-shirts. They have a random answer to a question on their hat like "a: Newfoundland" and the likes. The Smarty Pants are the other seventh grade team and they're really getting into it. It's a tough competition between the two.
Please support your fellow smart students this upcoming Saturday!
